Several years ago, Alyssa Villarreal, Coordinator of World Language for the Memphis City Schools, invited me to work with a hand-picked group of her teachers to train them to provide recurring professional development to new teachers in her district. Before we started our work, we sat down and pondered what makes for an effective workshop. Any foreign language professional who presents workshops--whether for district professional development or at professional conferences--might find these thoughts both insightful and helpful.
